When do you walk away?

October 9th, 2007 · No Comments

A friend asked me today “how do you know when it’s o.k. to walk away from a job”? At midlife I guess that I am not alone

in thinking about making this move. Oh wait, I did make this move. I finally got the balls to walk away from a highly lucrative executive management position. The question that my friend has asked was less about financial well being – although important. It was about the perks that come with big corporate jobs. The expense account, the first class travel, the suites at 5 stars hotels, having assistants and folks that work for you while you focus on “big picture strategic” issues.

I believe that at some point you can find the confidence and peace within yourself to let the trapping of corporate life go. Do I think it will be difficult – yes. Am I certain that I won’t do an about face back into the Fortune 50 world – no. What I can say is that for right now the decision feels right. The ‘next thing’ will be figured out and, like all else I have done, this will prove successful too.

How may folks head into their 50th birthday stapled to their desk because they are not able to pursue choices?

I’ll keep you posted on the progress.
