Thanksgiving Day 5k Run

November 11th, 2007 · 1 Comment

So today my better half asks if I want to run a 5k/10k on Thanksgiving Day. Of course the answer was yes as it not only gives us a great holiday activity and together time, it is great exercise. I should mention that I am not completely clear if her intention is to do the 5k or the 10k – I really do need to get that part clear.

I can run a 5k……a 10k should be driven!

Knowing that I only had 10 days to ‘train’ I headed for the local high school track and, iPod firmly affixed, began running around the track. Now as you can see from my stats on the right I am in reasonably good shape. That said my distance running capabilities are, let’s say, ever evolving.

The track was the standard high school issue 1/4 mile loop. One sign of age is the fact that I lost count of what lap I was on. I suppose that is a good sign as I know it was more than 4 laps. At one point around lap 8 or so I was thinking about how much I used to like to run in my preteen (read: ‘pre party’) years. I was actually pretty darn fast for a tall Jewish white kid from Long Island.

Long about lap 12, or maybe it was 13, I was at the 3+ mile point and even though I had more time left on my Podrunner track I knew it was time to wrap up. But wait just a minute. Why not do some stadium stairs? Yes, that’s right. 10 sets of stadium stairs just for good measure….and 1 more lap.

That was 12 hours ago. Did I mention the part about spending the rest of the day on the couch? Did I mention the inability to navigate the stairs IN MY HOUSE?

I am going to be really sorry tomorrow, I just can feel it. Oh and Tuesday is interval training with my personal trainer.

It’s got to be the 5k we’re doing, right?
