Lego Careers

November 1st, 2007 · No Comments

The last year has been filled with introspective thoughts about what constitutes ‘right’ versus ‘want’. Right seems to be the typical Lego Career. I coined this phrase to express

Nathan Sawaya www.brickartist.com the typical sequence of changing jobs. Traditionally this has been defined as the sequence of neatly fitting job one’s end to job two’s beginning, job two’s end to job three’s beginning and so on.

What games does the mind play when after 29 years of this Lego game the next step is not clear?

Plenty.

Have you heard of the term Gremlins? These are the thoughts (not voices, I’m not psychotic…yet) that the ‘other you’ has. That force that wants to tell you that the decisions you are making are wrong. That your best laid plans are ill conceived. The ‘I’m not good enough’ voice; the ‘I don’t deserve that’ voice. We all have the Gremlins inside of us. Listen closely and you will hear them.

What is it like to wake up on a day (oh, say next week) and realize that you don’t have to be anywhere that day? Predictably disconcerting, and a tad scary. You see I have been a corporate guy for all these years and now I am striking out on my own so I can get out from under the Man (sounds mighty 60’s, right?).

My battle against the Lego Career starts, in earnest, next Tuesday.

This will be a mighty fight I do believe.
